With this year’s show-stopping Mitsubishi Motors Badminton CCI5* Horse Trials officially here, young Wiltshire rider, Alicia Hawker is set to take on the world’s best for a second time! There is something quite magical about watching riders taking to the course who aren’t the same favourites year on year. We like to support the underdog! I know I do anyway!
Alicia Hawker who is 25 and from Hullavington, Wiltshire will take to the world stage onboard her long-term equestrian partner Charles RR as they head into the famous dressage arena in the heart of the Badminton Estate next week.
Alicia has self-produced multiple horses, including three to Advanced level and gained multiple wins and placings along the way in Senior International competitions. Having completed her first ever event with Charlie almost seven years ago now, Alicia ‘cannot wait’ to give Badminton another go this year.
Badminton Horse Trials is widely considered to be the ‘World’s Premier 3-Day Event’ and the fact that it is hosted within the beautifully breathtaking grounds of Badminton Estate in South Gloucestershire really just goes to prove it is an event like no other. This year, the even takes place from Wednesday 1st May through until Sunday 5th May.
Badminton Horse Trials is one of the toughest and most exciting equestrian events and for most, forms the pinnacle of the World’s 3-Day-Event calendar. As the name suggests horses and riders complete the competition over 3 days, each day consisting of a different phase. Horses and riders must complete a dressage test demonstrating obedience, and elegance. They need stamina to complete a 4 mile cross country course jumping solid man-made and natural obstacles within a set time and finally they must employ their accuracy to complete a course of show-jumps designed to test their agility at speed.
Attracting over 200,000 visitors over 5 days, Badminton regularly takes up it’s place as one of the top 10 largest sporting events in the UK. And it is in front of these enormous crowds, that Bath University Sports Performance BSc (Hons) graduate Alicia hopes to finish even further up the leader board than the top 50 placing that she and ‘Charlie’ achieved on their debut last year.
Alicia’s pure talent, grit and determination has led the young rider from Hullavington, Wiltshire, to be regularly competing at the very top level of the sport of International eventing against seasoned Olympians, completing Badminton last year as well as finishing 3rd in the Under 25 Championships at Bramham Horse Trials. With Badminton being her most local event, she is looking forward to performing on the World’s biggest stage in front of her home crowd.
All eyes will be on Alicia and Charlie at this years event as we’ll be rooting for them both enjoy themselves and above all, make it home safely. Good luck from all of us at In The Country!
