Okay, so I know this is supposed to be a blog showcasing all things British BUT I couldn't help mentioning the New Zealand Olympic Equestrian team.
I hold a soft spot in my heart and my mind for the country and it's lovely Kiwi citizens after living there for 7 months. Single handed One of the best experiences of my life so far!
I was gutted for the NZ team when I saw that Jock Paget had to pull his ride Clifton Lush out of the competition due to cutting his cheek on an exposed pipe outside of his stable during the night. However, it made me feel proud to hear that THEY made the decision to retire him. It was not forced, they put Clifton's welfare first despite the huge sacrifice to personal bettering!
I wonder how many of the nations teams would be as compassionate about their animals welfare? I feel the desire to win over shadows their equine team mates welfare sometimes. But the NZ team did their country and the sport proud.
As a result of Jock Paget's withdrawal from the competition, New Zealand's travelling reserve Tim Price rode in his place representing NZ with Ringwood Sky Boy. This is what Tim had to say about the change of plan; “I am really proud to make the team, but it’s disappointing that it comes off the back of the misfortune of my team-mate Jock and his connections.”
How modest! Well it was Tim's Olympic debut, and despite the 'misfortune' of his team mate what an incredible opportunity AND to ride and represent his country along side his wife Jonelle Price. The team just missed out on a medal placing in Eventing coming 4th.
